Hongdae is one of Seoul’s most popular tourist areas, and it is easy to find all kinds of restaurants there. However, if you want to experience the kind of Korean food that locals eat in their daily lives, the options can feel surprisingly limited. On this visit, I was craving a simple and traditional Korean meal, so I decided to stop by Nokwon Ssambap in Yeonnam-dong.
Nokwon Ssambap is located on the edge of Yeonnam-dong, near the road leading toward Yeonhui-dong. It feels quite different from the busy streets around central Hongdae. During my visit, the atmosphere felt more like a neighborhood restaurant than a place catering to tourists.
I walked from Hongik University Station along the Gyeongui Line Forest Park. The walk took about 15 minutes and felt like a pleasant break from the crowded main streets.

Atmosphere at 6 PM on a Weekday
I visited on a weekday at around 6 PM.
Even though it was close to dinner time, there was no waiting, and I was seated immediately. My companion and I spent about an hour enjoying our meal at a relaxed pace.
Most of the customers appeared to be in their 30s or older. During my visit, I did not notice any foreign visitors. The restaurant seemed to attract local residents and nearby office workers rather than tourists. The atmosphere felt very different from the busy restaurant scene typically associated with Hongdae.
I also noticed a few people dining alone, so it seemed like a comfortable place for solo diners.

What Is Ssambap?
If you are not familiar with Korean food, the word ssambap may be new to you.
Ssambap is a traditional Korean meal centered around rice, meat, and a variety of fresh vegetables. Diners place rice, meat, and side dishes onto lettuce, perilla leaves, cabbage, or other leafy vegetables and wrap everything together before eating it in one bite.
It has been a popular style of Korean dining for generations because it combines meat and vegetables in a balanced way. If you want to experience the type of Korean food that many locals regularly eat, ssambap is a good place to start.

A Surprisingly Simple Menu
The menu is very straightforward.
- Nokwon Ssambap – 18,000 KRW (pork and squid)
- Nokwon Bossam Set – 18,000 KRW (boiled pork)
I visited with one other person, and our total bill came to 36,000 KRW.
With only a couple of main options, ordering is quick and stress-free.
The main menu consists of two sets: the ssambap set and the bossam set, both priced at 18,000 KRW per person. Depending on your preference, you can choose either the pork and squid set or the boiled pork set.
Single portions are also available, making it a convenient option even for solo diners.nt option even for solo diners. If it’s your first visit, I’d recommend trying one of these two sets.

Unlimited Fresh Vegetables
One of the highlights of Nokwon Ssambap is the variety of fresh vegetables available for wraps.
There is a self-service vegetable station where guests can refill as much as they like. The selection included lettuce, cabbage, perilla leaves, kale, green chili peppers, and more.
I personally went back for refills three times during the meal. While I found myself reaching for the romaine lettuce and kale most often, there were many different vegetables available to choose from.
If you like vegetables, this is one of the most enjoyable parts of the dining experience. The fact that everything is included at no extra charge makes it even better.
Side dishes can also be refilled upon request.

The Surprisingly Memorable Doenjang Stew
The meal comes with several side dishes, including bean sprouts, seasoned spinach, seaweed salad, kimchi, dongchimi (radish water kimchi), and a bowl of doenjang stew.
The doenjang stew ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the meal for me.
Doenjang stew is a traditional Korean soup made with fermented soybean paste. It is one of the most common dishes found in Korean homes and local restaurants, often considered a comforting everyday food.
This was not a fancy version with premium ingredients. Instead, it tasted like the kind of doenjang stew many Koreans grow up eating. I found myself repeatedly reaching for spoonfuls of the broth throughout the meal.
If you want to experience everyday Korean food, this is one of the dishes worth trying.

Stir-Fried Squid and Spicy Pork
The Nokwon Ssambap set includes both stir-fried squid and spicy stir-fried pork.
The squid was the standout dish for me. It had a subtle smoky flavor and a pleasantly chewy texture.
The pork was also very satisfying. It paired well with rice and tasted even better wrapped in fresh vegetables.
As an adult male, I ended up ordering an extra bowl of rice. The portion itself was not small, but the seasoning of the squid and pork went so well with rice that I naturally wanted more.
People who are sensitive to spicy food may find the dish a little spicy. In that case, the bossam set might be the more comfortable choice.

What About the Bossam Set?
I had tried the bossam set on a previous visit.
Bossam is a Korean dish made with boiled or steamed pork served with kimchi. It is often enjoyed wrapped in vegetables, similar to ssambap, and is known for its mild and comforting flavor rather than strong seasoning.
The pork was clean-tasting, tender, and free of any unpleasant odor.
Personally, I found the stir-fried squid more memorable, but the bossam set would be a good option for those who prefer milder flavors.
If two people are visiting together, ordering one ssambap set and one bossam set to share could be a good combination.

What I Liked
- The subtle smoky flavor of the stir-fried squid
- The flavorful spicy pork that paired perfectly with rice
- Unlimited vegetable refills
- Being able to enjoy as many fresh vegetables as I wanted without worrying about extra cost
- The comforting doenjang stew
- Friendly staff
- A local neighborhood atmosphere rather than a tourist-focused restaurant

What Could Be Better
- About a 15-minute walk from Hongik University Station
- Slightly tucked away from the main tourist areas, which may make it less convenient for first-time visitors
Would I Visit Again?
Yes.
If I find myself craving a traditional Korean meal rather than pasta, Japanese food, or trendier dining options around Hongdae, I would happily come back. The stir-fried squid, fresh vegetables, and doenjang stew were the most memorable parts of the experience.
Final Thoughts
This feels more like a place where local residents come for a regular meal than a restaurant designed for tourists. If you want to experience the kind of Korean food many locals eat in everyday life, Nokwon Ssambap is worth considering.
