Their signature dish is sundubu (Korean soft tofu stew), served with freshly cooked pot rice. It isn’t the kind of restaurant people visit for a special occasion. Instead, it’s somewhere you can enjoy a familiar Korean meal without overthinking it.

This time, I visited the Bukchon Sundubu branch in Uijeongbu. I didn’t arrive with particularly high expectations, but I walked away feeling like I had simply enjoyed a satisfying, well-balanced meal.

Before the Meal

As soon as I sat down, one thing caught my attention before anything else—a small guide placed on the table.

It explained how to enjoy Bukchon Sundubu to the fullest, including how the raw egg served at each table is traditionally added to the stew. If it’s your first visit, it’s worth taking a minute to read through it.

I also liked that the restaurant lets you adjust the spice level or ask for certain ingredients to be left out, making it easy to customize the meal to your own taste.

By the time I finished reading the guide, the side dishes had already been set on the table, and the meal naturally began.

Even though I arrived a little after the lunch rush, most of the tables were still occupied. There was a natural mix of solo diners, office workers, and families enjoying their meals.

It felt much more like a neighborhood restaurant than a place aimed at tourists. I even noticed a few tables enjoying bottles of soju alongside their soft tofu stew, which made the atmosphere feel genuine and comfortably local rather than staged for visitors.

Nobody seemed to be in a hurry. Even after the food arrived, people simply took their time, which made the whole place feel surprisingly relaxing.

Waiting for the Food

This isn’t the type of restaurant where your meal arrives a few minutes after ordering.

The reason is simple—the rice is cooked fresh in an individual pot after every order.

It took around 10 to 15 minutes before everything arrived. At first, the wait felt slightly longer than usual, but once I started picking at the side dishes, time passed surprisingly quickly.

Rather than feeling inconvenient, the slower pace actually made the meal feel more relaxed.

Seafood Soft Tofu Soup

The first dish to arrive was the Seafood Soft Tofu Soup.

Before I even noticed the tofu, the seafood caught my attention.

The stew came with crab, shrimp, clams, and oysters. They weren’t there just for appearance either—the portions felt generous enough that each ingredient actually contributed to the meal.

The broth began with a clean, refreshing seafood flavor before finishing with a gentle spicy kick. It wasn’t aggressively spicy, but just enough to keep each spoonful interesting.

The tofu itself was incredibly delicate. It fell apart with almost no effort and had a silky texture that felt closer to cream than firm tofu.

Soft Tofu Soup & Stir-Fried Spicy Octopus Set

I also ordered the Stir-Fried Spicy Octopus Set.

The octopus was pleasantly chewy without being tough, and the seasoning offered more than just heat. Underneath the spice was a subtle smoky flavor that made it more enjoyable than I expected.

This dish really comes together when you eat it with the freshly cooked rice.

Placing the octopus over the rice balances the seasoning naturally, making every bite feel less intense.

It also pairs surprisingly well wrapped in roasted seaweed.

It’s a simple combination, but one that works remarkably well.

The Difference Fresh Pot Rice Makes

If there’s one thing that truly stands out here, it’s actually the rice rather than the stew.

Instead of serving ordinary steamed rice, Bukchon Sundubu prepares fresh pot rice after you order.

When the lid is lifted, steam rises immediately, followed by the warm, nutty aroma of freshly cooked rice.

That warm, nutty smell was probably the moment that stayed with me the most after the meal.

How to Enjoy Pot Rice

First, transfer the rice into your bowl while it’s still hot. This is when the aroma and texture are at their best.

Then enjoy it with the soft tofu stew, stir-fried octopus, and side dishes.

Once you’ve served most of the rice, pour some water into the pot and put the lid back on. While you continue eating, the scorched rice slowly softens into nurungji.

By the time it was ready, I had almost finished everything else. It felt less like a side dish and more like a quiet way to wrap up the meal.

The crispy rice eventually turns into a light, comforting soup, making for a relaxing finish to the meal.

Why Soft Tofu Stew Is Served in a Stone Pot(ttukbaegi)

There’s a practical reason why soft tofu stew is served in a traditional stone pot(ttukbaegi).

The stone retains heat for a long time, allowing the stew to stay hot until the very last spoonful. That suits the Korean style of eating, where soups and stews are often enjoyed slowly rather than rushed.

Another advantage is that the stone pot can be used for both cooking and serving. Compared with a metal pot, it distributes heat more gently, helping the broth maintain its flavor without boiling too aggressively.

In other words, the stone pot isn’t simply a traditional serving bowl—it’s a practical part of Korean food culture, designed to keep the stew hot from beginning to end.

Perilla Seed Soft Tofu & Original Soft Tofu (Mild / Vegan-Friendly Options)

If spicy food isn’t your thing or you’re simply looking for a lighter meal, there are a couple of milder choices worth considering.

The Perilla Seed Soft Tofu and Original Soft Tofu are both made without meat or seafood, making them suitable for people looking for a plant-based meal.

The Perilla Seed Soft Tofu has a rich, creamy broth made with ground perilla seeds. It isn’t spicy at all, and its nutty flavor makes it one of the gentlest options on the menu.

The Original Soft Tofu is the simplest version available. The broth is lightly seasoned, allowing the natural flavor of the tofu to stand out. If you prefer a stronger taste, you can add some of the soy sauce provided at the table.

Both dishes are good choices if you don’t enjoy spicy food or simply want something mild and comforting.

Soft tofu stew is usually served with a raw egg. If you don’t eat eggs, simply ask the staff to leave it out when ordering.

Price and Overall Value

We ordered the Seafood Soft Tofu Soup and the Stir-Fried Spicy Octopus Set.

The total came to around 30,000 KRW (about USD 22) for two people.

Most individual soft tofu dishes are priced at around 12,000 KRW, while set meals that include an additional main dish—such as stir-fried octopus, grilled short ribs, bossam (boiled pork), or bulgogi—typically cost around 18,000 KRW.

If you’re dining alone, a bowl of soft tofu stew makes for a satisfying meal on its own. If you’re a bit hungrier or visiting with someone else, the set menu is worth considering for the extra variety.

Considering the freshly cooked pot rice, generous side dishes, and satisfying portions, the price felt very reasonable.

More than anything, it left me with the feeling that I had enjoyed a proper Korean meal rather than just grabbing something to eat.

What I Liked

Freshly cooked pot rice

Generous amount of seafood in the stew

Well-balanced broth that wasn’t overly spicy

Relaxed atmosphere with mostly local diners

Comfortable for both solo diners and pairs

What Could Be Better

Because the rice is cooked fresh after ordering, the meal naturally takes a little longer than at a typical fast-service restaurant.

Also, the stir-fried spicy octopus may feel quite spicy for some people, especially if you’re not used to Korean spice levels.

Tips for Foreign Visitors

Soft tofu stew is served piping hot, so it’s best to let it cool slightly before taking your first bite.

Many Koreans crack the raw egg into the stew, which helps mellow both the temperature and the spice.

With the pot rice, transfer the rice into your bowl first, then pour water into the pot and put the lid back on. While you enjoy the rest of your meal, the scorched rice softens into nurungji, which is traditionally enjoyed at the end.

You can also ask the staff to adjust the spice level, make the stew less salty, or leave out certain ingredients when ordering. The restaurant is happy to customize your meal, so don’t hesitate to let them know your preferences.

Would I Visit Again?

It isn’t the kind of restaurant I’d call a hidden gem or a must-visit destination.

Instead, it’s the kind of place I’d happily return to whenever I want a warm, familiar Korean meal without having to think too much about where to eat.

Sometimes that’s exactly what you want—a place you know won’t disappoint when you’re simply looking for a comforting meal.

For a casual meal in Uijeongbu, it does exactly what it needs to do.

Since Bukchon Sundubu is a nationwide franchise, you can enjoy a very similar meal at many of its locations across Korea, making it an easy choice no matter which city you’re visiting.

One-line Summary

It may not be flashy, but the combination of soft tofu stew and freshly cooked pot rice delivers exactly what a comforting Korean meal should be.

How to Get to Bukchon Sundubu Uijeongbu Branch

Bukchon Sundubu Uijeongbu Branch is conveniently located near Uijeongbu Station, making it easy to reach on foot.
