However, if you want to experience the kind of Korean food that locals eat in their daily lives, the options can feel surprisingly limited. On this visit, I was craving a simple and traditional Korean meal, so I decided to stop by Nokwon Ssambap in Yeonnam-dong.

Nokwon Ssambap is located on the edge of Yeonnam-dong, near the road leading toward Yeonhui-dong. It feels quite different from the busy streets around central Hongdae. During my visit, the atmosphere felt more like a neighborhood restaurant than a place catering to tourists.

I walked from Hongik University Station along the Gyeongui Line Forest Park. The selection included lettuce, cabbage, perilla leaves, kale, green chili peppers, and more.

I personally went back for refills three times during the meal. While I found myself reaching for the romaine lettuce and kale most often, there were many different vegetables available to choose from.

If you like vegetables, this is one of the most enjoyable parts of the dining experience. The fact that everything is included at no extra charge makes it even better.

Side dishes can also be refilled upon request.

The Surprisingly Memorable Doenjang Stew

The meal comes with several side dishes, including bean sprouts, seasoned spinach, seaweed salad, kimchi, dongchimi (radish water kimchi), and a bowl of doenjang stew.

The doenjang stew ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the meal for me.

Doenjang stew is a traditional Korean soup made with fermented soybean paste. It is one of the most common dishes found in Korean homes and local restaurants, often considered a comforting everyday food.

This was not a fancy version with premium ingredients. Instead, it tasted like the kind of doenjang stew many Koreans grow up eating. I found myself repeatedly reaching for spoonfuls of the broth throughout the meal.

If you want to experience everyday Korean food, this is one of the dishes worth trying.

Stir-Fried Squid and Spicy Pork

The Nokwon Ssambap set includes both stir-fried squid and spicy stir-fried pork.

The squid was the standout dish for me. It had a subtle smoky flavor and a pleasantly chewy texture.

The pork was also very satisfying. It paired well with rice and tasted even better wrapped in fresh vegetables.

As an adult male, I ended up ordering an extra bowl of rice. The portion itself was not small, but the seasoning of the squid and pork went so well with rice that I naturally wanted more.

People who are sensitive to spicy food may find the dish a little spicy. In that case, the bossam set might be the more comfortable choice.

What About the Bossam Set?

I had tried the bossam set on a previous visit.

Bossam is a Korean dish made with boiled or steamed pork served with kimchi. It is often enjoyed wrapped in vegetables, similar to ssambap, and is known for its mild and comforting flavor rather than strong seasoning.

The pork was clean-tasting, tender, and free of any unpleasant odor.

Personally, I found the stir-fried squid more memorable, but the bossam set would be a good option for those who prefer milder flavors.

If two people are visiting together, ordering one ssambap set and one bossam set to share could be a good combination.

What I Liked

The subtle smoky flavor of the stir-fried squid

The flavorful spicy pork that paired perfectly with rice

Unlimited vegetable refills

Being able to enjoy as many fresh vegetables as I wanted without worrying about extra cost

The comforting doenjang stew

Friendly staff

A local neighborhood atmosphere rather than a tourist-focused restaurant

What Could Be Better

About a 15-minute walk from Hongik University Station

Slightly tucked away from the main tourist areas, which may make it less convenient for first-time visitors

Would I Visit Again?

Yes.

If I find myself craving a traditional Korean meal rather than pasta, Japanese food, or trendier dining options around Hongdae, I would happily come back.
